The Somali football federation (SFF) has started a repairing work on a football facility at the Somalia`s Political Science University in the southwestern edge of the lawless capital Mogadishu.
SFF president Mr. Said Mahmoud Nur on Monday supervised the stadium to study how the repairing work is under way. The president accompanied by his deputy Ali Said Guled Rooble, deputy secretary general Hassan Mohamed Mahmoud and other dignitaries met with Engineer Mohamed Osman Hassan who gave them full details about the repairing process.
President Said and his delegation inspected the different parts of the stadium and were very optimistic about a successful end of the process. He sent particular thanks to the residents in the area who are assisting the Somali football federation to accomplish the work.
"I am really happy with what is being done and I send my thanks to the Somali football authorities who are actually doing much work than can be accomplished in such chaotic country where every thing was destroyed" Engineer Mohamed Osman Hassan who is leading the repairing work told reporters.
"The stadium became like a grazing land, but I hope it will regain its lost beauty as a soon as possible" the Engineer stated.
Secretary General of Somali football federation Mr. Abdi Qani Said Arab told reporters that the main objective of doing this task is to get the stadium host the country’s division 1st and division 2nd football championships of the year 2010.
"We were elected to do something and even though we know that Somalia is experiencing one of the most difficuty times in history, then we have come to decision to repair this stadium and hold competitions here" the secretary general stated.
"We are very grateful to the residents in the Hodon district who really gave us an assistance and encouragement to repair the stadium and I am very hopeful that the work will end in success" Mr. Abdi Qani added.
Somali football federation used to hold the championships at the country`s two main football facilities Stadium Mogadishu and Banadir stadium which are not currently ready for hosting the competitions, because of insecurity here.
For a period of 2 years, 2007-2008 the Chinese-built stadium Mogadishu, the largest in Somalia was a military compound for hundreds of Ethiopian troops who were assisting the Somali government and after their withdrawal from Somalia in mid January this year, the stadium was occupied by Islamist fighters who are currently using it as a military base.
Like wise the reconstruction work of the second largest facility in Somalia Banadir Stadium is on half because of the insecurity here in Mogadishu. The stadium reconstruction was started in mid last year and was due to be concluded by early this year, but due to the daily armed confrontations in the Abdel Aziz district in Mogadishu where the stadium is located the work was halted and according to the SFF authorities will be recommenced if the security situation allows.
